HOW TO BECOME A MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENGINEERING?
To become a Master of Science in Engineering (M.Sc.) you must complete a two phased university degree. This means that first you’ll complete a Bachelor’s degree of 180 credits which includes 70 cr of basic studies, 50 cr of your major, 10 cr of Bachelor’s thesis, 25 cr of your minor and 25 cr of studies you are free to choose. To complete the Bachelor’s degree in the target time (3 years), it is scheduled that one completes 60 cr per academic year. This means 3 years of full-time studies.
Your major for Bachelor’s degree, the Built Environment, defines your studies fot he first three years. In your studies, the built environment will be examined from different point of views: real estate economics, transportation engineering and landscape planning.
You can choose a minor that fits your interests and needs, and you also have the possibility to turn your focus your degree where you want to with your freely picked courses. The built environment is as a field very complex and multidisciplinary which gives you the perfect opportunity to study a various selection of minors and other courses.
After completing your Bachelor’s degree the next step is to move to a specilisation in your intermediate studies – Master’s program. the most common option is to select a program provided by our School of Engineering. Most students will select either Real Estate Economics or Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering Master’s program.
It is also possible to apply to some other Master’s program if your previous studies encourages it and you have succeed well in your Bachelor’s degree. One can also consider the option of completing a double Master’s degree with a various combinations.

Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering (SPT)
Urban realities are becoming increasingly dynamic, complex and fragmented while demands for their liveability, sustainability, competitiveness, and attractiveness increase. This requires new skills in systemic understanding, problem-solving, and integrative planning and policy-making beyond sectorial boundaries.
This programme focuses on important future challenges of sustainable built environment, tackling topical global megatrends, such as urbanization and need for greener cities. The uniqueness of the program is its focus on a wide range of approaches from people’s daily life and mobility to large scale strategic and systemic thinking necessary for shaping the built environment. In his/her studies, the student can specialize in spatial and land use planning or transport engineering, or obtain a broader expertise integrating both fields. As a graduate of this programme, you will become an enabler of a sustainable future in cities. In addition, you will be able to improve the quality of life for people – in a variety of scales, now and in the long term. Our graduates can specialise in different professional roles of choice, including urban, regional and/or transportation planner, developer, analyst, policy-maker, traffic engineer, transportation modeller, Intelligent Transport Systems engineering, manager, or researcher.
Real Estate Economics (REC)
The Master’s Programme in Real Estate Economics offers students a thorough education in the field with a focus on technology, economy, law and management of real estate. Courses within the programme cover the skills and knowledge required to manage real estate in all its different phases. All students in real estate economics will be introduced to the principles of real estate economics and the dynamics of real estate market, as well as valuation methods and investment analysis. All students will also improve their knowledge on real estate and environmental legislation and the planning system, and their role in real estate markets. Students of the programme can specialise in either Real Estate Economics and Management or in Land Management. Real Estate Economics and Management
Real estate economics and management focuses on real estate investment and business, real estate development and the management of real estate assets throughout their lifecycle.
Land Management Land management focuses on the process of managing the use and development of land resources. In this specialisation the students enhance their knowledge on managing land-related rights and land policy.
STUDENT COUNSELLING
Student counselling and guidance is given by many different members of the entire Aalto University faculty and guild members who are tutors. Aalto University School of Engineering has a student counselling point in room K103, Konetalo, Otakaari 4. In this point you can get student counselling, get an official sertificate regarding your studies and pick up your diploma after completing a degree.
